The Perfect Hot Chocolate with Candy Cane Stirrers

I feel kind of funny writing about Sundays With Joy this week when my mind is elsewhere. I am still wrapped up in the CT shootings. Trying to wrap my head around my sadness for those families, why a senseless act like that happens in our world, and how easily that could have been our school and my son. I have had nightmares the past two nights like I am sure so many parents have. I know in my head, that crime is at an all time low here in the states, in fact we have one of the lowest crime rates in the world. It doesn't take away my fears of sending my child to school tomorrow, or the fear of being shot in a movie theater, mall or any other public place. That thought is always in the back of my head.

I have written and deleted this blog post 3 times now and am sitting here thinking what is appropriate to write? How do I sit here and talk about hot chocolate when the country is mourning 26 innocent people. 20 of them between the ages of 5-10?

I just have no words right now.

So I leave you with this....

Every child should have memories of waking up on a snowy morning to bundled up and play in the snow. They should come inside to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate topped with tons of whipped cream or fluff. These are the little things that make childhood memories. I know I will be taking more time outs from life to enjoy simple pleasures such as a cup of hot chocolate on a cold day with my kids.

Joy's hot chocolate is a mixture of melted chocolate chips and white chocolate with milk.... even a bit of instant coffee. To kick mine up a notch I topped it with a peppermint whipped cream. Simply whipping heavy cream with a bit of sugar and a 1/4 tsp of peppermint extract.

Then to make it so much more fun..... candy cane stirrers. These are simple to make and would even make a great gift for Christmas paired with a fun mug and some hot chocolate mix?

For Joy the Bakers Perfect Hot Chocolate... you need to get a copy of her book. Click HERE for where to find it.

To make Candy Cane Stirrers:

1 box of peppermint candy canes
1 cup of milk chocolate chips
Christmas sprinkles (optional)

In a double boiler mix and milk chocolate until smooth and melted. Dip ends of candy canes in chocolate, place on parchment paper to harden. Sprinkle festive sprinkles (optional).

  1. You know, I had those same feelings as I wrote my post. I didn't articulate them like you did, but those thoughts were in my mind. Everything can change so quickly...

On a much lighter note, this is beautiful.

  2. Very well said, Carrie. And I love the cocoa!

  3. I made chocolate covered candy canes over the weekend but didn't use them as hot chocolate stirrers. Now I'm kicking myself! What an adorably delicious idea. :)

  4. Your post truly brought tears to my eyes. This week's post was hard for me too - but I kind of took the chicken way out, I didn't even address the sadness facing our world today. To be honest, I don't understand it - and therefore, I can't talk about it :(
And I think you hit it spot on, two weeks ago I went to the movies with my boyfriend and oddly enough, I kept looking around - - I hate that feeling of unease :(
Joy's recipe this week, made things a little better - even if it was just for a quick second. Great post, I loved it :)
